Description
Composition
Each ml contains Sulphadimidine Sodium 33.33% w/v
Description
Sulphadimidine is a short-acting antibacterial agent. It is grouped under synthetic antimicrobial agents that contain the sulphonamide group.
Chemical structure
Indications
Urinary tract infection
Prostatitis ( infection of the prostate gland )
Respiratory tract infection
It inhibit the growth or reproduction of bacteria but not killing the bacteria. It blocks the synthesis of bacterial dihydrofolic acid and therefore inhibits the growth of bacteria
Mechanism of action
It inhibit the enzymatic conversion of pteridine and p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to dihydropteroic acid by competing with PABA for binding to dihydrofolate synthetase, an intermediate of tetrahydrofolic acid (THF) synthesis.
Contraindications
Sulphadimidine should not be used in patients suffering from porphyria, a disorder with an excess chemical called porphyrin that affects nervous system and skin
It is not recommended in kidney failure patients because the drug is rapidly excreted in urine
Patients with G6PD (glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase) deficiency should not take sulphadimidine because of the occurrence of blood disorders such as anemia, agranulocytosis, hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia
It should not be used in patients allergic to the drug
